ORGANIZE! Your Collection
Catalog file information Utility ----
This documenation and accompanying software are copyright
1994 by H.C.P. Services, Inc. Distribution of this software
is covered by the terms of the distribution license in the
VENDOR.DOC file accompanying this software. If there is no
VENDOR.DOC file, then you may not give this utility to others
without permission from HomeCraft software.
This utility is used to fix problems in OYC data files caused
by damaged files. In most cases files are damaged by errors
introduced by fragmented or cross-linked files on a hard disk.
The best protection is to regularly backup up your catalog files
and to defragmet your hard disk on a regular basis.
DISCLAIMER: This utility was developed for internal use by
HomeCraft in creating catalogs of pre-entered information.
There is no warranty and we do not provide technical support
for this utility. It is provided only because some people
may find it helpful. Solving a damaged file problem can
be very difficult. This utility provides some tools that will
help discover the cause of a problem and even solve some problems.
It is not within the scope of this documentation or utility
to provide a complete troubleshooting guide.
This utility may be used with OYC catalog files created by any
of the following software:
ORGANIZE! Your Collection (DOS Version)
ORGANIZE! Your Collection (Windows Version)
ORGANIZE! Your Collection (Windows Multimedia Version)
ORGANIZE! Your... (all shareware versions)
ORGANIZE! Your... (all lite versions)
The FILEINFO.EXE file must be copied to the same drive and directory
where the OYC.EXE file is located. It will not work if placed in
any other directory.
To use this utility go to the DOS prompt for the directory
containing the OYC.EXE file, type FILEINFO, and push ENTER. This
utility may be run in Windows by using the "RUN" option on the
files menu.
When the utility starts you will be prompted to enter the name of
the catalog you want the utility to work on. If the catalog is
on another drive or in another directory, you can also enter the
drive and path. (Do not enter a filename extension, only enter
the name of the catalog).
The next screen shows a list of the lines (fields) in the
specified catalog. The length of each line is also shown. If
there is a problem with the file that results in the software not
being able to read the file, and error code will be displayed.
You'll then be able to use any of the three availabled "fix" utilities.
Below the list of filenames is an important set of information. It
shows the total number of entries, the calculated record size, and
the record size that is set in the catalog. The calculated and set
record sizes should be the same.
You can check/view individual entries by typing in an entry number
and pushing ENTER.
You can use the "fix" utilities by typing the letter "F" and pushing
enter.
There are three "fix" utilities:
Use these utilities with caution. They can damage a good catalog.
Be sure you have a backup copy of the catalog you are working on.
You may need to try several things, and recover the original
catalog after each attempt at repairing the file.
1) Set number of entries. This feature allows you to set the number
of entries in a catalog. It might be used, for example, if the
middle section of a catalog is damaged and OYC is only reading half the
catalog. Setting the total number of entries to a higher number
might allow OYC to have access to the entries in the second half
of the catalog.
2) Set field lengths. This feature allows you to set the length of
each line in an OYC catalog.
3) Set flags. Each entry in an OYC catalog has a "flag" attached that
identifies it as a valid entry, or a deleted entry. If the flags are
not correct OYC may show entries as having "NO INFORMATION ENTERED".
This utility goes through the entire catalog and sets all the flags
to the "good" setting.
IMPORTANT: ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP COPY OF YOUR CATALOG BEFORE
USING THIS, OR ANY OTHER, UTILITY TO MODIFY THE CATALOG.
